Ayamail vs Proton Mail
Proton Mail and Ayamail both offer ad-free email with calendar, storage and a password manager. They are built for different needs. Here is an honest comparison, including where Proton is the better choice.
The short answer
Choose Proton Mail if your top priority is email that the provider itself cannot read. Proton uses PGP to encrypt mail end to end between Proton users and stores your inbox encrypted with your own key. Ayamail does not.
Choose Ayamail if you want one account for the whole family, including children under 15 with their own address, where only senders a parent has approved get through. Proton has no dedicated child accounts.

Where Proton Mail is stronger
- Your stored mail is encrypted so that Proton cannot read it. At Ayamail, mail on our servers is not end-to-end encrypted unless you use PGP.
- Mail between two Proton users is end-to-end encrypted with PGP automatically.
- More shared storage on Duo (2 TB) and Family (3 TB).
- A VPN is part of the larger plans.
Where Ayamail is stronger
- Child accounts for children under 15, set up and managed by a parent in the Family Center.
- Approved senders: a child only receives mail from people the parent has approved. It is on by default.
- Parents can choose to get a copy of mail from new senders.
- The Family plan covers 6 adults and 4 children.
- More space on the free plan: 3 GB instead of 1 GB.
- Family photo albums, encrypted on your device, that you can share with a link, a password and an expiry date.
What Ayamail encrypts, and what it does not
Your mail is protected with an encrypted connection (TLS) to and from our servers, and we require encrypted delivery from other mail servers. Mail is stored on our own servers at Hetzner in Germany. If you want to send a message only the recipient can read, you can turn on PGP encryption or send a password-protected message.
Your files, photos, passwords and documents are encrypted on your own device before they are stored. Only you have the key, and we cannot read them. Calendar and contacts can be encrypted.
Price
Ayamail's paid plans are generally priced below Proton's comparable plans, while Proton gives more storage on Duo and Family. Prices depend on your country and change over time, so compare the current prices on both pricing pages.

Questions and answers
- Does Ayamail encrypt all mail end to end with PGP like Proton Mail?
- No. Ayamail protects mail with TLS in transit and stores it on our servers in Germany, but without PGP it is not end-to-end encrypted. You can send single messages with OpenPGP or as a password-protected message. If you need every message end-to-end encrypted with PGP by default, Proton Mail is the better fit.
- Can my child under 15 have an Ayamail account?
- Yes, on the Family plan. A parent creates the child account in the Family Center. Approved senders are on by default, so the child only receives mail from people you have approved.
- Does Proton Mail have child accounts?
- Not as of the date above. Proton Family gives each member a separate account, but Proton does not describe child accounts or approved senders for children on its family page.
- Where is my Ayamail data stored?
- On our servers at Hetzner in Germany. Ayamail is run by 3XAYA LTD in the UK.
